  • About the Producer

Under the direction of Helmut Dönnhoff since 1966, Weingut Hermann Dönnhoff has become the powerhouse of the Nahe, expanding from a modest 3.5 hectares in 1966 to over 30 today. Not only that, but it has grown to become one of Germany’s leading estates, producing a dazzling array of wines to suit all tastes, from dry to very sweet, but all marked by precision and energy. Over the last 10 years he has handed over control to his son Cornelius, who has continued an unbroken run of fine vintages.

  • About the Latest Vintage

The Nahe is the driest region in Germany, but in 2019 there was always just enough rain to avoid drought, and it helped that the Dönnhoffs have a high proportion of old vines, with roots deep enough to access water. There was little disease pressure, but like most other growers their vineyards suffered from sunburn during the July heatwave. This had no effect on quality, as most affected berries dropped to the ground before harvest, but it meant that the potential crop was on the small side. The end of August promised perfectly healthy grapes and an easy harvest, but rain in September confounded this prediction: it began to rain, and the harvest became very challenging. Ripeness accelerated, and botrytis began to take hold: it became a race to pick the grapes at optimum ripeness, and sort the botrytis-affected grapes, used for sweet wines, from the healthy ones, used for dry.

After over fifty years of making wine, it would be understandable if a certain fatigue crept into the soul. Not here. Helmut Dönnhoff spoke about the 2019 with the excitement of a schoolboy: I have tasted with him for over twenty years – and have never seen him so enthusiastic about a vintage. It’s easy to see why. He commented that more challenging vintages usually turn out to be more complex and energetic, and there is no lack of that here.

Some years are better for dry wines, some for sweet, but in 2019 it’s both. They are a flawless collection of beautifully focussed, balanced wines that will give pleasure early on but last for decades.
