Lenkey is all history and tradition. Its vineyards are in the heart of Tokaj, Hungary’s most famous region, and the wine is matured in deep labyrinthine cellars built in the 1500s. The estate believes in long maturation in cask and then in bottle before releasing its wines. The story here began tragically. Géza Lenkey Senior purchased ten hectares of vines in 1999, but died in 2001 with only a couple of vintages under his belt. With no experience in winemaking, his son Géza Junior sprang into the breach, and has been making ever better wines that rank with the region’s best.
The estate’s ten hectares comprise fifteen distinctive plots in eight vineyards, situated mostly in the volcanic soils of Mád. Processes here are about as minimal as you can get. The vineyards are farmed entirely organically, and yields kept very low. There is no chaptalization, and the wines are left in Hungarian oak casks for long ageing before bottling. The result is spicy, long-lived wines that perfectly reflect their terroirs.
