‘The smallest harvest of Spätlese ever and as difficult to harvest as a Beerenauslese,’ said Peter-Bernhard. ‘We performed rigorous pre-selection to pick out bad berries, left the bunches on the vine for a while before making a wine with 100% botrytis. We couldn’t believe the low ripeness level – just 83 Oechsle, which is absurd for botrytis-affected grapes.’ It is quite unique – all the density of a far more luscious wine, but none of the sweetness, clarity and purity, and a long fine juicy minerality that runs and runs. Quite astonishing indeed.
