Maximin von Schubert and his winemaker Stefan Kraml continue to produce some of the best wines in Germany from one of its very finest terroirs, a contiguous strip of the three vineyards Bruderberg, Herrenberg and Abtsberg. There is something magical about these wines: if you have the patience to wait, they acquire a melting elegance that calls you back for more. Our completely impartial advice is to buy more than you think you will need.
2022 Vintage
2022 was the driest year on record at the estate. In the second half of August, the vines shut down and ripening slowed; photosynthesis only started again after rain fell at the beginning of September. With more intermittent rain throughout the rest of the month, the vines directed the water into the grapes, providing welcome refreshment.
Cool weather and dilution from the rain meant that the sugar levels did not increase but the acidity ripened steadily and lost its harsh green edge, a process that is crucial for balanced, drinkable wines.
The main harvest began on 20 September, with ripe, very aromatic and perfectly healthy fruit, producing wines of
crystalline clarity and freshness – they are amongst the finest we tasted. No red wine was made in 2021. Instead, the estate has released the top cuvée from 2020 – The Gloria.
