Chardonnay is a perfect foil for the gypsum soils of the Gips. The Aldingers are not fans of new oak, preferring larger, neutral tonneaux to barriques, so there is little new wood here: it provides some support, but takes a backseat to the vibrant, pure citrus fruit – lemon, grapefruit, blood orange and even a hint of pineapple and aniseed. Gradually the fruit is joined by a gently building juicy minerality, leading to an intense stony salty finish. An astonishingly fine and subtle wine, one of the best Chardonnays we tasted.
