Reds for Autumn

The morns are meeker than they were,
The nuts are getting brown;
The berry's cheek is plumper,
The rose is out of town.

Maison Camille Giroud

2014 SANTENAY 1er cru Clos Rousseau (CAMI20214A)
Clos Rousseau is in the southern part of the commune, on the border of Maranges, and the wines from here are known rather for power than finesse. But the genius winemaker David Croix has coaxed out both: there is hedgerow fruit tinged with spice, silky texture and a proper backbone that is integrating beautifully as the wine ages. A very lovely Santenay indeed.

2013 SAVIGNY-LES-BEAUNE 1er cru Les Peuillets (GUIT34213A)
Wines from Santenay are known for sauvage, a heady, bramble character ' and here it is, but the sandy soils of the vineyard give a forward red-fruited and beautfully textured wine, brimming with energy and finishing on a long sweet note.

2013 SPÄTBURGUNDER 'R' [26 15] (JULG76213A)
Much more structure to accompany the pure red fruit. There is a silkiness, a juicy intensity, and lots of minerals on the long finish.Most of Johannes Jülg's vines are just over the border in France overlooking Wissembourg. The grapes for the 'R' grow in the clay soils of the Wormberg vineyard, which lends power and richness, and its north-westerly aspect keeps the wines cool and fresh. The fruit is juicy and pure and an elegant minerality emerges on the long finish.

2014 PINOT NOIR* [19 15] (KOCH44214A)
Rich and spicy, with warm rounded red fruit and a hint of earth. There is a delightful purity and energy; and it is silky all the way to a smooth long finish.From the heart of the Kaiserstuhl in Baden, where loess covered volcanic soils give ripe wines that can all to easily become fruit bombs, but not in the hands of Holger Koch, whose focus is fresh, balanced wines with elegance and longevity. The 2014 is on perfect form now: there is spicy red fruit, a rich textured middle and a smooth and fresh finish of great persistence.
