2017 Joh.Jos. Prüm Offer
This famous Mosel estate, one of Germany’s finest, has released its 2017s.
2017 was an extreme year: cold, frost, rain, drought heat and hail presented challenges that were only surmounted with intensive work in the vineyards. They might have lost half the crop along the way, but after strenuous efforts the Prüms were rewarded with a lovely vintage. A glorious golden autumn facilitated the harvest, which began unusually early on 25th September and finished on 18 October, and a delicate botrytis enabled the production of some beautiful Auslese Goldkapsel, BA and even TBA.
The wines are dense, ripe and brisk, with beautiful balance and transparency, along with a powerful mineral component. They have a long life ahead of them.

2017 GRAACHER HIMMELREICH Kabinett [05 18] (PRUM10217A)
Zingy, beautifully elegant and fine, this is full of citrus and smoky mineral flavours, and finishes exceptionally long.
2017 GRAACHER HIMMELREICH Spätlese [09 18] (PRUM20217A)
A smooth, restrained elegance prevails. The fruit is floral and peachy, the backing minerality has an appealing smoky earthiness, and the finish is juicy and long.
2017 WEHLENER SONNENUHR Spätlese [10 18] (PRUM22217A)
As always, this is the finest and most effortlessly elegant of all the Prüm Spätlesen. It is particularly dense this year, and shows typical perfumed floral fruit and a persistent minerality on a long smoky finish.
2017 GRAACHER HIMMELREICH Auslese [12 18] (PRUM30217A)
An unusually high proportion of botrytis ' around 30% 'gives this a round smoothness, but the touch is so light that there is no loss of transparency. There is pithy citrus fruit, a hint of yellow plum and a long fresh smoky finish.
2017 WEHLENER SONNENUHR Auslese [13 18] (PRUM32217A)
Confession: during our tasting, I wrote: 'bright, vibrant and gorgeous and then stopped, swept away by how delicious this wine tasted. Only years of experience and professional rigour forced me back to my notebook. So yes. It's full of energy, as well as smooth peachy fruit tinged with pithy citrus, floral flavours, an exceptionally finely woven minerality and a very long, balanced finish.
2017 GRAACHER HIMMELREICH Auslese Goldkapsel [15 18] (PRUM38217A)
The pure light botrytis gives a smooth character to this ripe and rounded wine. There is appealing golden-yellow fruit, and it is intense, balanced and poised, ending on a long, delightfully smoky mineral note.
2017 BERNKASTELER LAY Auslese Goldkapsel [16 18] (PRUM39217B)
Lay is a subplot of the larger Badstube vineyard above it, and in the past, wines from the two were often blended together. Since Katharina Prüm has taken over, the wines are bottled separately every year. They are individual in their own right: proximity to the water makes the vineyard warm (and ideal for botrytis), and some clay mixed with the slate protects from drought ' the latter a factor in 2017. This year the wine is dense yet smoothly textured, with ripe yellow fruit, bright citrus flavours, and a delicate pure minerality. The finish is dense and long.
2017 WEHLENER SONNENUHR Auslese Goldkapsel [17 18] (PRUM40217A)
It is rare to come across a wine that is both powerful and delicate, but here we are: a light blanket of pure botrytis concentrates the ripe yellow fruit, adding a touch of creamy richness. Underneath there are vibrant floral and intense mineral notes that combine with the zingy citrus acidity to balance the sweetness, making this a gorgeous, fresh and magical wine.
