Five Summer Wines

With the rest of August and all of September left, we're ready with five fresh, lively whites (and rosé!) to savour over the remaining summer months.

2019 Schmätterling Rosé, Weingut Ziereisen
£74 per case (6x75cl including Duty and VAT)

It's the time of year to turn our attention to the perennial search for the perfect summer rosé. With the astronomical rise of Provence rosé (and the accompanying rise in price), everyone has their eye on the next big thing.

We tried this Pinot Noir-based rosé against a pretty pricey Provence one. I know we’re biased, but really: we’ll start with 1.5 degrees less alcohol, and then compare brightness, freshness and purity of fruit. The German won. And the iron proof: at the end of a fairly bibulous evening there was half a bottle of French rosé left.

2017 Heugumber Gutedel, Weingut Ziereisen
£74 per case (6x75cl including Duty and VAT)

This is one of the best value whites in our portfolio, and somehow manages to be criminally overlooked every summer. Gutedel (called Chasselas in Switzerland) is making a comeback in Germany, spearheaded by the energetic Hanspeter Ziereisen. This is his entry-level Gutedel, but is such good value that it would be mad not to stock up for your summer aperitifs.

Heugumber means grasshopper in local dialect, and is an appropriate name for this delicious, crisp and vibrant wine, packed full of fresh yellow apple and pear fruit and finishing on a long, smooth, note lightly brushed with a saline minerality.

2016 Weissburgunder, Weingut Bernhart
£81 per case (6x75cl including Duty and VAT)

Gerd Bernhart has made his name on brilliant Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc, his wines only improving with each passing year. His wines benefit immensely from careful attention in the vineyards; all his vineyards are farmed organically and harvested by hand. Pinot Blanc has seen leaps and bounds in quality in recent years and has been experiencing a resurgence of popularity as wine lovers have branched out into other German wines besides Riesling.

Proper Pinot Blanc can age very well, especially with Gerd's hand at the helm. Grown on limestone rich soils, it is rich and creamy, balanced by fresh citrus notes, and finishes with a mineral flourish.

2018 Chardonnay Holzfass, Weingut Knewitz
£106 per case (6x75cl including Duty and VAT)

Tobias Knewitz took over this Rheinhessen estate from his father in 2009 and has become one of the sleeper hits of our portfolio. He is becoming a big name Germany.

If you like blousy rich Chardonnay, this is not for you. Grown on poor limestone soils, it is a lean, zippy, smoky number of astonishing purity, full of vibrant citrus fruit and a delightfully fine saline seam, and finishing in on a fresh energetic note. Wow!

2017 Jacobus Riesling, Weingut Peter-Jakob Kühn
£92 per case (6x75cl including Duty and VAT)

And, if you must, a Riesling....

But what a Riesling! This is the entry level wine from the famous biodynamic Kühn estate, but it’s Rheingau at its best. Scented floral and pithy grapefruit notes mingle in this mouth-filling, bright smooth wine, and there is hint of lemon balm on the long finish.

It's unusual to find such great quality at the entry level.
