Fleurie & Chiroubles from Beaujolais Newcomer Pauline Passot

Sebastian returned from France late last year clutching four bottles of Beaujolais and would not shut up about them. When we tasted them we shared his enthusiasm: Pauline Passot is a proper discovery.

We took her wines on with a unanimous yes.

We were pleased that our mailing list seemed to wholeheartedly agree; all four wines sold briskly after we introduced them, and went out of stock within a few short months.

We're happy to say that we've just received a shipment from Pauline Passot to replenish our stocks. With write-ups from Julia Harding and Jane MacQuitty, we don't expect it to last long.

About the Domaine
Although she grew up on her family’s estate, Pauline discovered wine in a bar in Ireland. She found she loved talking about it, and fell into a restaurant career as a sommelier, finally spending four years at the famous Lyon gastronomic temple Pierre Orsi. A vintage at the Seresin Estate in New Zealand in 2014 showed her that talking about wine was not enough: she wanted to make it.

Winemaking studies in Beaune were followed by stints at several wineries, including Lafarge. She leased an organic vineyard in Chiroubles – the Grille Midi – and in 2018 took over her family's six hectares. One of her first steps was to begin conversion to organic methods. Her winemaking is traditional: fermentation is in a mixture of steel and 600-litre casks, there is little destemming, little extraction and a low fermentation temperature. It is the precise attention to detail that makes the wines shine.

Domaine de la Grosse Pierre

2018 Chiroubles La Grosse Pierre (GRPI08218A)
From deep pink granite soils around the estate. Intensely floral fruit with gamey undertones is balanced by supple melting tannins, the whole fresh, pure and vibrant.

In Bond
Equivalent bottle price inc. VAT: £11.68

2018 Fleurie Bel Air (GRPI10218A)
A tiny parcel in Fleurie?s best vineyard gives a taut, beautifully elegant wine, with smooth dark blackcurrant fruit, chocolatey tannins and a lifted raspberry note on the finish.
6 Bottle - 75cl £57.00
In Bond
Equivalent bottle price inc. VAT: £14.08

Domaine Pauline Passot

2018 Chiroubles Grille-Midi (PASS20218A)
Pauline Passot?s third vintage here, and by far the best. A warmer vineyard makes the wine ripe and rich, with dense blackcurrant fruit and a hint of licorice, but the melting tannins and pointed acidity lend balance and freshness. A complex wine that will show better over time.
6 Bottle - 75cl £87.00
In Bond
Equivalent bottle price inc. VAT: £20.08
