Weingut Wittmann en primeur

Back to producer list Grower profile 2017 was not short of challenges. April frosts were followed by a wet summer, and then a hailstorm took out large chunks of the Morstein and Absterde. The wines are more structured and full-bodied than the 2016s, and lower yields have given great density.

2019 Riesling [06 20] (WITT24219A)
Any fruit seen as not up to scratch was declassified into another estate wine, so instead of being the repository of lesser fruit, the quality here is extremely high. It is dense, juicy and fresh, with clearly delineated cool green fruit, lively citrus acidity and a salty creamy finish.

2019 Westhofener 1G [14 20] (WITT34219A)
Grapes from young vines in the Morstein vineyard give a rich, broad earthy wine with pithy citrus fruit and delightfully fresh acidity, finishing on a long, slightly creamy saline note.

2019 Niersteiner [15 20] (WITT36219A)
Vines in Nierstein are rapid ripeners, and tend to give broader, fatter wines. This was fermented partially in steel rather than oak casks to slim down that tendency, and it is fresh and pure, with some yellow fruit, raspberries, notes of iodine and a very fine juicy ripe pithy finish.
