2013 ZELTINGER SCHLOSSBERG 'Schmitt' [13 14] (SELB39213A)
More widely known as Chasselas, Gutedel has a reputation for producing at best, neutral early-drinking quaffers. But not here. The grape is one of the world's oldest, and a classic of southern Baden. The estate already produces excellent versions, but with this wine Hanspeter Ziereisen wished to show that it can hold its own with the world's best whites: precisely because of its neutrality, he believes it reflects the vineyard character better than any other white varietal. This vineyard has 50-year-old vines, and he increased their density to 10,000 per hectare by planting young vines between them (hence 104). The result is extraordinary, mouthfilling, mineral-driven and long. 600 bottles produced.
2010 ZELTINGER SCHLOSSBERG 'Schmitt' (SELB39210A)
The zingy, zesty acidity keeps it fine, long and pure. Real mineral crunch, with bright citrus and peach fruit. Delightful.
2008 ZELTINGER SCHLOSSBERG 'Schmitt' (SELB39208A)
