2018 Silvaner [06 19] (MAYR10218A)
Made from young vines from great sites, this is forward and smooth, with bright yellow fruit softened by a touch of honey and defined by salty mineral flavours on the finish.
2017 Silvaner [02 18] (MAYR10217A)
Made from young vines from great sites, this is a forward charmer with yellow fruit, some salty mineral flavours and a fresh finish.
2017 Silvaner Retzstadt [08 18] (MAYR20217A)
This village, or Ortswein, comes in the traditional Franconian bottle, the Bocksbeutel, which may bring back memories of a dubious Portuguese product. don't be put off. 30-year-old vines on fossil-rich limestone soils (including the GG Himmelspfad) give an astonishingly fine, vibrant wine with yellow fruit flavours, including passion fruit, and a fresh salty finish.
2016 Silvaner Retzstadt (MAYR20216A)
2018 Silvaner Retzstadter Langenberg (MAYR30218A)
This 1er cru, or Erste Lage is made from 40-year-old vines in the heart of the vineyard, growing on very poor limestone soils that give only very small berries. The ripeness of the vintage is apparent in the rich yellow fruit, but the fine chalky minerality and vibrant freshness provide a more than adequate counterpoint. It is pleasingly long.
2017 Silvaner Retzstadter Langenberg [13 18] (MAYR30217A)
This 1er cru, or Erste Lage is made from 40-year-old vines in the heart of the vineyard, growing on very poor soils. It is very lean and fine, with melting mineral flavours and a hint of smooth tropical fruit.
2018 Silvaner Der Schäfer Retzstadter Langenberg [14 19] (MAYR32218A)
From a subplot of the Langenberg vineyard facing south-east and planted in 1969, with naturally low yields and vinified in a new 1200-litre cask. I have never been a fan of new wood in aromatic white wines, but this wine forced me to think again. It is beautifully judged: the oak adds breadth and hints of smoke and spice to the pure fine yellow fruit, and it has density, freshness and length.
2017 Himmelspfad Silvaner GG [18 18] (MAYR40217A)
From the warmest part of the Langenberg vineyard, which is composed primarily of fossil-rich fine limestone. The soil is poor, and the vines are the estate's oldest, at fifty-five, which keeps yields correspondingly low. It is effortless, a dense, rich wine, packed with smooth rounded fruit, a freshening lemon/grapefruit edge and an effortless fine minerality on the finish.
2016 Himmelspfad Silvaner GG [16 17] Retzstadter Langenberg (MAYR40216A)
From the warmest part of the Langenberg vineyard, which is composed primarily of fossil-rich fine limestone. The soil is poor, and keeps yields low, and the vines are the estate?s oldest, at fifty-five. There is rich pithy citrus fruit, lots of power and a long elegant finish. Drink 2018 ? 2027
2017 Rothlauf Silvaner GG [19 18] (MAYR42217A)
From the best parcel of a cooler vineyard in neighbouring Thngersheim, the Johannisberg, which features the same fossil-rich limestone, but here mixed with multicoloured sandstone. The wine is aged in equal parts in steel, concrete egg and wood, and shows how this often under-rated varietal can be an excellent foil for terroir. It is pure, focussed and smooth, with taut citrus and lychee notes, plus a delicate minerality that emerges gradually from under the vibrant fruit and persists through the long juicy finish.
2016 Rothlauf Silvaner GG [18 17] Thüngersheimer Johannisberg (MAYR42216A)
From the best parcel of a cooler vineyard in neighbouring Thüngersheim, the Johannisberg, which features the same fossil-rich limestone, but here mixed with multicoloured sandstone. Aged in equal parts in steel, concrete egg and wood, this is elegant, perfumed and fine, with a delicate mineral structure and real length. Quite a revelation. Drink 2018 ? 2027
