Weingut Peter Lauer en primeur Back to producer list
2017 was a challenge, but ultimately very rewarding. Frost damage to the early bud break was mitigated by vigorous secondary bud growth, but rot problems in September greatly reduced yields. Painstaking work in the vineyard and rigorous selection of individual bunches and even berries resulted in clean, rich and balanced wines. Thanks to the heavy rain in August, the vines sucked up more matter from the soil, meaning that they have very high dry extracts, and are full of flavour. An onset of botrytis in October produced a stunning range of late harvest wines.

2018 Saar Riesling Fass 16 [16 19] (LAUE06218A)
Clean and fresh, packed with floral, peach and apricot kernel flavours, and defined by a powerful minerality driving to a rich finish.
2018 Kupp Fass 18 GG [18 19] (LAUE32218A)
A fresh slaty wine of great density, with loads of juicy citrus, melting ripe apple and yellow orchard fruit, and a silky stony minerality that builds to a long and satisfying salty finish.
2018 Schonfels Fass 11 GG [11 19] (LAUE34218A)
An inviting perfumed citrus- and smoke-laden nose yields to rounded elegant fine silky fruit and a beautifully elegant flowing salty mineral finish. A gorgeous wine.
2018 Saarfeilser Fass 13 GG [13 19] (LAUE36218A)
From the estate's warmest site, a steep west-facing slope directly on the river. A powerful ripe wine this year, with a gentle smoky note that tempers the juicy rich yellow fruit, green tea and spice flavours.
2018 Kupp Kabinett Fass 8 [08 19] (LAUE40218A)
Bright, pure citrus fruit with a pleasing sweetness is whipped into shape by bracing ripe acidity and well defined mineral flavours. Lovely tension and balance here.
2018 Kupp Spätlese Fass 7 [07 19] (LAUE44218A)
At first impression this is rounded and lush, with perfumed golden-yellow fruit, but then a brisk lemony acidity kicks in, narrowing the wine’s focus and tempering it’s sweetness, abetted by fine salty flavours on the fresh finish.
2018 Lambertskirch Spätlese Fass 14[14 19] (LAUE45218A)
The Lambertskirch vineyard, down-river from the Schonfels, was planted to fruit trees when Florian Lauer purchased it in 2010. He believes it to be a great site, and it certainly has the necessary: a south-facing steep slope of very rocky grey slate. The ripe yellow fruit is freshened by green herbal notes, and there is a cool streak of bitter, salty zingy minerality running through this intense, supremely elegant wine to a long sweet-sour finish.
2018 Kupp Auslese Fass 10 [10 19] (LAUE54218A)
There is a steely edge to the gentle floral and citrus notes on the nose, which accompanies the ripe, balanced fruit all the way to a salty, almost dry finish. It is elegant and refined and triumphs more with understated finesse than power and sweetness.
