Weingut Peter Lauer en primeur

Back to producer list Grower profile 2017 was a challenge, but ultimately very rewarding. Frost damage to the early bud break was mitigated by vigorous secondary bud growth, but rot problems in September greatly reduced yields. Painstaking work in the vineyard and rigorous selection of individual bunches and even berries resulted in clean, rich and balanced wines. Thanks to the heavy rain in August, the vines sucked up more matter from the soil, meaning that they have very high dry extracts, and are full of flavour. An onset of botrytis in October produced a stunning range of late harvest wines.

2019 Saar Riesling Fass 16 [16 20] (LAUE06219A)
A smoothly integrated combination of cool green fruit in the form of gooseberry and fresh herbs, fine stony flavours and ripe citrus acidity. It is juicy and fresh, and there is a lively long finish. Quite outstanding for an estate Riesling.

2019 Kupp Spätlese Fass 7 [07 20] (LAUE44219A)
Proper Spätlese territory now: the minerality is darker, and the yellow fruit goes rapidly from juicy yellow grapefruit and ripe peach to mango and papaya, joined by distinct spicy flavours of nutmeg and orange zest, and finishing on a long pure salty note.

2019 Lambertskirch Kabinett Fass 14 [14 20] (LAUE45219A)
The Lambertskirch was a Celtic sacred site, and it must have transferred some magic to the wines made there, because they have a special tranquillity and elegance. This is more densely woven and carries a little more weight than the Kupp, but it is finer, with some melting yellow fruit joining the fresh cool green flavours. It is transparent, pure and bright, crackling with energy all the way to the long salty finish. As Hugh Johnson once said of Saar wines: 'in great years, they have the inevitability of great art.' And this is a great year.

2019 Kupp Auslese Fass 10 [10 20] (LAUE54219A)
All the zing of the Kabinett with the density of an Auslese. There is greenness here, but a small proportion of botrytis adds melting yellow fruit flavours, and there is powerful fine dark mineral core. The acidity is ripe and lemony, but very present, and the focus and transparency make the wine almost ethereal.
