Saar Riesling Cremant Brut [09 14] (LAUE90212A)
Tastes as a sparkling Riesling should: fresh and vibrant with good weight and balance. The mousse is fine and gentle, and there is good length and power.
1992 Riesling Brut Natur Reserve (Zero Dosage) Disgorged 2016 (LAUE92092A)
Strictly for purists, this zero dosage fizz has the austerity one would expect, but it is beautifully balanced and fresh. There is a lovely biscuity nose, gentle citrus and saline mineral flavours and a lovely long finish.
2018 Saar Riesling Fass 16 [16 19] (LAUE06218A)
Clean and fresh, packed with floral, peach and apricot kernel flavours, and defined by a powerful minerality driving to a rich finish.
2017 Saar Riesling Fass 16 [16 18] (LAUE06217C)
Fruity, forward and bright, a lean smoky mineral streak and a fresh salty finish deliver a wine punching well above its weight.
2019 Kupp Fass 18 GG [18 20] (LAUE32219A)
Still, duty calls. No hardship when you taste something as good as this. Kupp usually needs time to show its best, but this one is very forward. There is still a touch of austerity: the minerality though fine, is powerful and very present, but there is an abundance of ripe fruit â?? juicy citrus, pears and spice to balance it. The finish is long and full of mineral heat. A quite outstanding effort that will run and run.
2018 Kupp Fass 18 GG [18 19] (LAUE32218A)
A fresh slaty wine of great density, with loads of juicy citrus, melting ripe apple and yellow orchard fruit, and a silky stony minerality that builds to a long and satisfying salty finish.
2017 Kupp Fass 18 GG [18 18] (LAUE32217A)
From the estate's warmest site, a steep west-facing slope directly on the river. This is a complex wine: there is forward, peachy fruit tinged with fresh green flavours, bright acidity and a powerful lingering mineral presence on the finish.
2016 Kupp Fass 18 GG [18 17] (LAUE32216A)
More for the long haul: there is a steely note evident here that shuts down the fruit, which will only resolve with a little time. The potential is great: this is a dense, complex wine of great elegance, with bright juicy fruit, brooding smoky minerality and a juicy, pithy, salty finish. Drink 2019 – 2032
2018 Schonfels Fass 11 GG [11 19] (LAUE34218A)
An inviting perfumed citrus- and smoke-laden nose yields to rounded elegant fine silky fruit and a beautifully elegant flowing salty mineral finish. A gorgeous wine.
2017 Schonfels Fass 11 GG [11 18] (LAUE34217A)
A beautifully smooth and vibrant wine with bright citrus fruit, melting salty mineral flavours and a juicy long finish. There is everything to like here: it is harmonious, effortless and seamless.
2016 Schonfels Fass 11 GG [11 17] (LAUE34216A)
A very smooth, elegant and accessible wine of great purity and finesse. T he fruit is ripe and there is a delicate mineral vein with bright citrus acidity. A long complex finish combines clear notes of peach, slightly bitter and salty minerals and a lovely piquant acidity. Drink 2018 – 2032
2019 Saarfeilser Fass 13 GG [13 20] (LAUE36219A)
A floral, almost musky nose of roses and citronella; on the palate it is soft, smooth and rich, there are green notes, and a lovely fine mineral seam on the long pithy citrus and spice finish.
2018 Saarfeilser Fass 13 GG [13 19] (LAUE36218A)
From the estate's warmest site, a steep west-facing slope directly on the river. A powerful ripe wine this year, with a gentle smoky note that tempers the juicy rich yellow fruit, green tea and spice flavours.
2017 Saarfeilser Fass 13 GG [13 18] (LAUE36217A)
The first impression is of fresh green and yellow fruit and bright lemon flavours, but then the structure of the wine emerges: it is taut and vibrant, brimming with energy and power and given definition by a fine, very smooth minerality. Best put aside for a while.
2016 Saarfeilser Fass 13 GG [13 17] (LAUE36216A)
The most forward of Lauer GGs: warm rich and very ripe soft yellow fruit balanced by a firm backbone of brisk acidity leading to a smooth sweet-sour finish. Drink 2018 - 2032
2019 Kupp Kabinett Fass 8 [08 20] (LAUE40219A)
A fine, delicate Kabinett, lean, pure and weightless, but packed with flavour. There is floral lime blossom, elderflower, brisk lemony acidity and a long fresh salty finish.
2017 Lambertskirch Kabinett [14 18] (LAUE41217A)
The Lambertskirch vineyard, downriver from the Schonfels, was planted to fruit trees when Florian Lauer purchased it in 2010. He believes it to be a great site, and it certainly has the necessary: a south-facing steep slope of very rocky grey slate. The wine bears this out: it has fresh cool green notes, and a zingy pithy quality, as well as great length.
2016 Ayler Spätlese Fass 7 [07 17] (LAUE44216A)
Picked from the same parcels a week after the Kabinett. Ripe golden grapes give lovely rich fruit redolent of ripe mirabelles, balanced by a vibrant, juicy finish with a mineral kick.
2019 Kupp Auslese Fass 10 [10 20] (LAUE54219B)
All the zing of the Kabinett with the density of an Auslese. There is greenness here, but a small proportion of botrytis adds melting yellow fruit flavours, and there is powerful fine dark mineral core. The acidity is ripe and lemony, but very present, and the focus and transparency make the wine almost ethereal.
