Schlosskellerei C von Schubert en primeur Back to producer list
In 2017 frost did considerable damage, and yields are half those of 2016. The harvest was early, and since it was warm the grapes ripened quickly, resulting in very little Kabinett. There was also a danger of rot, so the pickers finished their job at some speed, which gave only a small quantity of Auslese.

2019 Maximin Riesling (GRUN02219A)
2019 Riesling alte Reben trocken [02 20] (GRUN06219A)
Not a wine we usually buy, but the oldest vines in the Abstberg and Herrenberg did particularly well in the dry hot summer, and have produced a dense, cool, mineral-driven wine with notes of fresh herbs, pears and lively acidity, finishing smooth and long. Such finesse at this level is unexpected and a real pleasure.
2019 Herrenberg GG [03 20] (GRUN10219A)
A lean, smooth, very fine wine with pithy citrus and juicy fresh green notes, plenty of salty flinty mineral flavours and a very long fine finish lasting for minutes.
2019 Abstberg GG [16 20] (GRUN11219A)
More powerful than the Herrenberg, with greater density and weight. There is a lovely juicy green freshness, ripe yellow pear fruit and a pithy, very fine ripe slaty minerality on the long finish.
2019 Abtsberg Superior [18 20] (GRUN16219A)
The finest grapes of the Abtsberg, fermented with minimal intervention to near dryness. A dense, powerful wine, buoyed by lively acidity and a cool lean slaty mineral backbone, with typical notes of herbs and spice.
2019 Herrenberg Kabinett [06 20] (GRUN20219A)
Herrenberg has a better water supply than the Abstberg, and can shine in drier years. It certainly does in 2019: bright and vibrant, it is defined by cool green fruit and pure lean stony flavours, and the finish is juicy and long.
2019 Abtsberg Kabinett [08 20] (GRUN22219A)
More opulent than the Herrenberg, there is some yellow fruit to complement the classic herbal notes, and there is a little more charm to the fine minerality. The low yields lend density, and there is a beautifully judged interplay between ripe juicy fruit and lively citrus acidity.
2019 Abtsberg Spätlese [05 20] (GRUN32219A)
It’s all happening here: melting yellow fruit, herbs, beautifully fresh ripe citrus notes, a silky slaty minerality. It is densely woven, and the pressure of the ripe vintage clearly in evidence, but it is balanced, playful, and delicate. In other words, it slips down a treat.
2019 Herrenberg Auslese [09 20] (GRUN40219A)
You don't get more precise and typical than this impeccable Auslese: cool herbal notes, pears almost a stemminess at first, and then as the wine unfolds a little bit of botrytis comes into play, lending a juicy raisined and spicy quality, followed by a very finely-woven salty minerality emerging on the long finish.
2019 Abtsberg Auslese [12 20] (GRUN42219A)
Picked at the same ripeness level as the Herrenberg, but here the fruit is mellow and yellow, with considerably more botrytis. It has the density of a Beerenauslese, but remains light and elegant, with zingy citrus acidity and a long, seamless mineral-driven finish.
