2017 Graacher Himmelreich Auslese [12 18] (PRUM30217A)
An unusually high proportion of botrytis - around 30% - gives this a round smoothness, but the touch is so light that there is no loss of transparency. There is pithy citrus fruit, a hint of yellow plum and a long fresh smoky finish.
2016 Graacher Himmelreich Auslese [09 17] (PRUM30216B)
Magical poise and bags of energy on this vibrant, dense and elegant wine. There is ripe pure yellow plum and pithy grapefruit, lemon-tinged acidity and a smoky melting minerality on a long, powerful finish.
2015 Graacher Himmelreich Auslese [16 16] (PRUM30215A)
A dash of botrytis adds a creamy note to the ripe fruit, a mixture of pear, peach and greengage. But there is not a trace of surplus weight: the vibrant acidity and rich, slightly smoky minerality lift the fruit flavours into perfect balance. This is poised, elegant and complex.
2018 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese [12 19] (PRUM32218A)
What so many growers are going for, but don't achieve: as close to effortless as you can get. There is enormous energy, a steely core of smoky slate, loads of sweet ripe yellow fruit, ripe lemony acidity and a melting, long rich finish. It will last longest of all the Prüm
2017 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese [13 18] (PRUM32217A)
Confession: during our tasting, I wrote: "bright, vibrant and gorgeous" and then stopped, swept away by how delicious this wine tasted. Only years of experience and professional rigour forced me back to my notebook. So yes. It's full of energy, as well as smooth peachy fruit tinged with pithy citrus, floral flavours, an exceptionally finely woven minerality and a very long, balanced finish.
2016 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese [13 17] (PRUM32216A)
All things to all men: delightful ease and charm, but also serious depth and complexity. There is white peach and hints of riper tropical fruit, vibrant citrus acidity and a hugely intense smoky minerality that keeps the wine focussed, pure, and tasting almost dry. It is effortless, ethereal, and while delicious now, will provide pleasure for many decades. (Did I mention that I liked it?)
2011 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese [18 12] (PRUM32211B)
Yellow stone fruit ? mirabelle and peach ? combining with very fine pure mineral flavours give a creamy roundness to this very long elegant wine. A hint of spice and fresh herbs on the finish
2010 Bernkasteler Badstube Auslese Goldkapsel [08 11] (PRUM35210A)
2017 Graacher Himmelreich Auslese Goldkapsel [15 18] (PRUM38217A)
The pure light botrytis gives a smooth character to this ripe and rounded wine. There is appealing golden-yellow fruit, and it is intense, balanced and poised, ending on a long, delightfully smoky mineral note.
2015 Graacher Himmelreich Auslese Goldkapsel [18 16] (PRUM38215A)
There is noticeable botrytis here, but it is so light and pure that it remains in the background, softening the wine and adding a note of creamy complexity. The wine is gorgeously precise, with delightful elegance and intensity.
2014 Graacher Himmelreich Auslese Goldkapsel [18 15] (PRUM38214A)
Gentle, sweet and very concentrated, this has ripe lemony acidity and a lively peach fruit, backed by a fine minerality. Very moreish. Drink 2024-2045.
2013 Graacher Himmelreich Auslese Goldkapsel [12 14] (PRUM38213B)
Intense botrytis gives rich, rounded slightly darker, but still very vibrant fruit. After a second in the mouth comes a rush of mineral flavours making the wine taste almost dry. They mingle with the yellow stone and citrus fruit on a long, bittersweet finish.
2012 Graacher Himmelreich Auslese Goldkapsel [16 13] (PRUM38212A)
Some botrytis, but of such purity that it does not blur the vibrant yellow fruit, which is almost painfully bright and intense at this stage. Fine, elegant mineral flavours build to a lean lemony finish of great length.
