2016 Pinot Noir [30 18] Niederberg Helden (SCLI80216A)
Oh ye of little faith. We offered Thomas Haag's Pinot Noir years ago, and while extremely well-made, we were not excited by the quality of the fruit, due in our opinion to the clones rather than the way the vines were cultivated. Several years on we tried a bottle of 2011, and were amazed by the quality: it was silky, balanced and fine. So here is the wine again. It is delicate, strawberry-fruited and light, with a smoky edge and a long smooth finish, and well worth getting your hands on!
2012 Lieser Niederberg Spätburgunder [19 15] (SCLI80212A)
Pretty red strawberry fruit, a whiff of earthy mineral and lovely purity and length.
2011 Niederberg Helden [23 14] Pinot Noir (SCLI80211A)
Pure ripe strawberry fruit with typical smoky notes. This is fuller-bodied, with more mineral components on show, but remains vibrant and pure.
2010 Niederberg Helden Pinot Noir (SCLI80210A)
As pure as Pinot Noir gets. The small quantities involved (a barrique of 250 litres) facilitated the gentlest handling of each stage of the winemaking process: at the close of fermentation, for example, the grapes were transferred to the press by bucket rather than being pumped. Pressing was extremely gentle. The result is a perfumed spicy wine that is positively ethereal.
2013 Schloss Lieser Kabinett Trocken [03 14] (SCLI02213A)
Crisp and well-defined, showing grapefruit and smoky spice notes and a long ripe finish.
2017 Himmelreich GG [22 18] (SCLI04217A)
A very poised wine, made in an uncompromising reductive style, but showing all the elegance of which the Himmelreich is capable: there is floral fruit, lightness and vibrancy, and a juicy mineral flourish on the finish.
2016 Himmelreich GG [22 17] (SCLI04216A)
Delicious, floral and vibrant, with spice and pithy citrus flavours, finishing on a long juicy note. Drink 2019 ? 2030
2015 Himmelreich GG (SCLI04215A)
Vibrant and powerful, this displays pretty floral and stone fruit, and long fine mineral notes.
2013 Schloss Lieser Spätlese Trocken [06 14] (SCLI04213A)
Much more weight. Crystalline purity, with spicy smoky elegant ripe fruit and a breathtaking freshness and elegance.
2017 Juffer GG [21 18] (SCLI06217A)
A model of transparency: there is floral fruit, bright lemony acidity and a breathtakingly fine minerality. This is an "entry level" GG, but has more energy and pure elegance than many grander names.
2016 Juffer GG [21 17] (SCLI06216A)
Perfumed and floral, this is warm, but lean and racy on the palate, with a fresh, elegant minerality that runs through the juicy finish. Drink 2019 - 2030
2015 Juffer GG [18 16] (SCLI06215A)
A typical mixture of delicacy and power here. There is lovely fruit concentration, vibrant citrus acidity and a very long fine mineral-driven finish.
2016 Niederberg Helden GG [23 17] (SCLI07216A)
Lots of stony aromas mingle with cool pear and grapefruit in this powerful, dense wine that is at no point heavy, but has a beautifully lean, bright middle and a long juicy elegant finish. Drink 2019 ? 2030
2014 Niederberg Helden GG [08 15] (SCLI07214A)
Very slaty and intense. This is smooth, rich and balanced but has tremendous energy and a delicate purity, building to a creamy, salty mineral finish.
2013 Niederberg Helden GG [07 14] (SCLI07213A)
Pure, bright, and elegant, with spicy peach fruit and a delicate mineral flavours. It is finely structured and weightless, with a racy energetic finish.
