Schloss Lieser en primeur Back to producer list
Thomas Haag and his right-hand man Philipp Veser must be the best organised people in the Mosel: they dealt smoothly with the challenges of frost and rot, and because yields are down by a third, the resulting wines are concentrated and quite brilliant.

2019 Himmelreich GG [29 20] (SCLI04219A)
With bright pure citrus, floral and white peach fruit, this vivacious wine is very much at the elegant end of the spectrum, finishing in a very fine long salty note.
2019 Juffer GG [28 20] (SCLI06219A)
A floral, seemingly delicate wine with gentle pear and citrus flavours, but underneath lies the fine, powerful dark slatiness of the vineyard, giving energy and length. This year there is added smoothness without any compromise of purity, and it is juicy and bright throughout.
2019 SL Kabinett [04 20] (SCLI10219A)
Playful, elegant and very pure, with freshness and a spicy cool minerality to complement the floral elderflower and herb notes.
2019 Juffer Kabinett [10 20] (SCLI12219A)
Delicate aromatic floral notes and yellow fruit mingle in this charming, accessible wine. It is a little richer and more rounded than the Helden, but has zingy ripe citrus acidity, lots of fine salty flavours and finishes on a lean, almost dry mineral note.
2019 Niederberg Helden Kabinett [08 20] (SCLI13219A)
Reduced yields make themselves felt even at this level: the wine is tightly woven and you sense the pressure of the ripe vintage at the edges. The flavours are amplified: dark stony minerals, bright citrus, herb and yellow fruit, but despite the density it is playful, light and completely transparent.
2019 Niederberg Helden Spätlese [14 20] (SCLI20219A)
High levels of sunburn damage meant faster ripening for the remaining grapes, so the Helden had to be harvested first. The balance is just right: densely structured yellow fruit, brisk lemony acidity and a typical dark earthy core ending on a fine salty note.
2019 Juffer Sonnenuhr Spätlese [15 20] (SCLI22219A)
Leaner and less rich than the Helden, the yellow fruit here is partnered with a more linear minerality, and the wine is finer and a little longer, with less obvious power. Below the delicate surface though, a firm backbone easily balances the vibrant acidity, and promises a very long life.
2019 Goldtröpchen Spätlese [17 20] (SCLI23219A)
Rounded yellow fruit is joined by spicy herbal notes, and a very fine stony minerality that drives to a long, juicy salty finish. Bags of energy here too, and all the hallmarks of great longevity.
2019 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese [20 20] (SCLI27219A)
An amazing achievement. How can a wine be so intense and rich, and yet so lifted? And you're back to Amoureuses. Heady floral aromas are joined by cassis and elderflower, and there is a superfine mineral structure elevating the yellow fruit, well-integrated ripe citrus acidity, ad a silky salty finish. Cor!
2019 Goldtröpchen Auslese [21 20] (SCLI29219A)
The richest of the Auslesen produced here. The fruit is round, yellow, and ripe, peachy with hints of the tropical and spice, but the acidity is brisk and keeps it fresh, underpinned by powerful dark wet slate that leaves the tongue tingling for minutes.
2019 Niederberg Helden Auslese [18 20] (SCLI30219A)
There is a little more sweetness here than in the Helden Spätlese, more roundness and density, but there is also more acidity, and this, combined with the cool vintage character, keep it fresh. Toward the finish the broad stony minerality becomes more pronounced, bringing with it salty notes, while rendering the finish almost dry. It is a complex, expressive wine with a great future.
2019 Niederberg Helden Auslese Goldkapsel [22 20] (SCLI31219A)
One of the most impressive features of 2019 is its purity. Every wine we're offering clearly reflects its origins, and it fascinating to come across the same elements as you progress from Kabinett to the highest ripeness levels. So this Helden has the same basic structure as its less ripe incarnations – a rounded richness, dark spicy mineral core and brisk lemony acidity, but the fruit is thicker, more densely woven and yellow, and there are clear tropical notes and a hit of barley sugar, followed by a fine salty finish.
2019 Juffer Sonnenuhr Auslese [19 20] (SCLI35219A)
Like the Helden, this was harvested early, and is cool, lemony and taut. The golden yellow fruit is pure, its richness tempered by the well delineated fine minerality that builds to a persistent smoky salty finish.
2019 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese Lange Goldkapsel [26 20] (SCLI46219B)
Some of the world's greatest sweet wines come from this vineyard, and this wine shows why. It wears the burden of the dense, rich tropical fruit lightly, thanks to the fine, powerful minerality and brisk acidity. The combination of density and weightlessness is quite magical.
2019 Niederberg Helden Beerenauslese [27 20] (SCLI50219B)
A wine that shows the greatness of the vintage. It is luscious and thick, lent a dusty note by the dense yellow botrytised fruit, but there is no fat, and it remains lean and focussed, with bright acidity and a powerful dark minerality shining through on the long finish. Your awestruck taster couldn't spit this one.
