2017 Graacher Himmelreich Auslese Goldkapsel [15 18] (PRUM38217A)
The pure light botrytis gives a smooth character to this ripe and rounded wine. There is appealing golden-yellow fruit, and it is intense, balanced and poised, ending on a long, delightfully smoky mineral note.
2015 Graacher Himmelreich Auslese Goldkapsel [18 16] (PRUM38215A)
There is noticeable botrytis here, but it is so light and pure that it remains in the background, softening the wine and adding a note of creamy complexity. The wine is gorgeously precise, with delightful elegance and intensity.
2014 Graacher Himmelreich Auslese Goldkapsel [18 15] (PRUM38214A)
Gentle, sweet and very concentrated, this has ripe lemony acidity and a lively peach fruit, backed by a fine minerality. Very moreish. Drink 2024-2045.
2012 Graacher Himmelreich Auslese Goldkapsel [16 13] (PRUM38212A)
Some botrytis, but of such purity that it does not blur the vibrant yellow fruit, which is almost painfully bright and intense at this stage. Fine, elegant mineral flavours build to a lean lemony finish of great length.
2011 Graacher Himmelreich Auslese Goldkapsel [19 12] (PRUM38211A)
Creamy pure botrytis with cool mineral flavours on the palate, joined by ripe pear and mirabelle fruit. Subtle and fine.
2010 Graacher Himmelreich Auslese Goldkapsel [15 11] (PRUM38210B)
2017 Bernkasteler Lay Auslese Goldkapsel [16 18] (PRUM39217B)
Lay is a subplot of the larger Badstube vineyard above it, and in the past, wines from the two were often blended together. Since Katharina Prüm has taken over, the wines are bottled separately every year. They are individual in their own right: proximity to the water makes the vineyard warm (and ideal for botrytis), and some clay mixed with the slate protects from drought - the latter a factor in 2017. This year the wine is dense yet smoothly textured, with ripe yellow fruit, bright citrus flavours, and a delicate pure minerality. The finish is dense and long.
2016 Bernkasteler Lay Auslese Goldkapsel [05 17] (PRUM39216A)
We are seeing more bottlings of this vineyard recently, which was previously blended into the Badstube. This is a good thing, as it produces very fine wines of individuality and character. The south-facing slope gives ripe wines, this year with a lovely pure botrytis that lends a creamy note to rich fruit and smoky minerality, and there is beautiful balance and intensity on the long finish.
2018 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese Goldkapsel [15 19] (PRUM40218A)
Almost no botrytis here, and so the vineyard characteristics are in plain view: playful delicate floral notes, ripe citrus acidity, and a fine steely smoky core. But it's still a Goldkapsel folks, so of course the exuberant fruit is very luscious, smooth and long, and the minerals are melting, elegant and build to a powerful crescendo on the long smoky salty finish.
2017 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese Goldkapsel [17 18] (PRUM40217A)
It is rare to come across a wine that is both powerful and delicate, but here we are: a light blanket of pure botrytis concentrates the ripe yellow fruit, adding a touch of creamy richness. Underneath there are vibrant floral and intense mineral notes that combine with the zingy citrus acidity to balance the sweetness, making this a gorgeous, fresh and magical wine.
2016 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese Goldkapsel [14 17] (PRUM40216A)
A wondrous experience. There is great depth of very ripe fruit with strong citrus elements shading into the tropical, balanced by a juicy ripe acidity and a massive hit of vanishingly fine smoky mineral flavours that, astonishingly, make the finish almost dry. A considerable achievement, which will be best enjoyed some years after bottling.
2011 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese Goldkapsel [20 12] (PRUM40211A)
Beautifully poised and almost weightless, which is astonishing given its density: packed with yellow fruit and very polished mineral flavours, and a finish lasting minutes. One of the finest wines of 2011.
