2018 Passetoutgrain (GRFF04218A)
Along with Lafarge, the domaine makes the best Passetoutgrain we know. Normally there is 25% Gamay, but poor flowering reduced this to just 10%. It is rich, melting and chocolatey, with bags of fresh black cherry fruit and a fine long finish.
2017 Passetoutgrain (GRFF04217A)
Along with Lafarge, the domaine makes the best Passetoutgrain we know. It has 25% Gamay, and the fruit is fresh, ripe and brambly, driving through to a long fine finish. For Nicolas, it is the equivalent of having a beer - delicious, uncomplicated and refreshing.
2018 Bourgogne Rouge (GRFF06218A)
From two parcels, one under the Clos Vougeot, the other on the Gevrey side of Morey. A dense wine with black juicy fruit, underpinned by generous slighty chalky tannins lending structure and energy. The finish is bright and long.
2018 Gevrey Chambertin Les Seuvrées (GRFF10218A)
Vines just under Mazoyères Chambertin, where lighter, red clay soils mixed with sand give a pure angular, mineral-driven wine. 1/3 whole-cluster vinification adds a vibrant, floral note to the rich black fruit, and there is an appealing purity and elegance to the long fresh finish.
2018 Chambolle Musigny 1er cru Les Hauts Doix (GRFF20218A)
A very poised wine, with clearly defined pretty red fruit, ripe tannins, and a mineral backbone, all lightness, energy and silk, and a vibrant fresh finish.
2017 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Hauts Doix (GRFF20217A)
50% whole bunch fermentation gives lifted, raspberry fruit that shades to darker black cherry as the wine opens. It is rich and sweet, but there is a silky quality too, and the tannins are ripe and fresh.
2016 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Hauts Doix (GRFF20216A)
No frost damage here. Densely woven ripe strawberry fruit is given definition by elegant tannins and vibrant acidity, and the finish is fresh, precise and long.
2018 Chambolle Musigny 1er cru Les Sentiers (GRFF22218A)
Old vines produced very small berries, so nothing was destemmed here. Sentiers gives a strict, lean wine with firm tannins that indicate the need for some ageing. It certainly has the balance to do so: there is plenty of juicy, delicate red fruit and considerable density on the finish.
2018 Chambolle Musigny 1er cru Les Amoureuses (GRFF26218A)
Groffier is the largest holder of Amoureuses, with 1.2 hectares, and the style is usually different to that of most other growers, showing more weight and power. It is a microcosm of a successful 2018: there is a mass of ripe red fruit, but it is pure and luminous; the tannins are there in force, but they are fine, melting and integrated, and there is a subtle dark seam of minerality underpinning it all. A wine of great depth, intensity and elegance.
